People & Culture Lead
• Full-Time • Vancouver
We’re still a relatively small company, but we’re growing! And while we believe that having a positive, successful studio culture and happy engaged people is everyone’s responsibility, we recognize that at our size we need someone whose particular focus is on these elements. This is the perfect moment to add a People & Culture Lead to the team to help us put the right processes and programs in place to ensure our people and culture continue to thrive as we continue to grow.
We’re looking for a veteran generalist, someone who has handled the full spectrum of HR-related operations from talent acquisition, performance management, employee retention and benefits programs, to working with external immigration agencies to support our international hires.
The ideal candidate already has extensive experience in HR and talent acquisition for a medium- to large-sized game developer or publisher. A large component of the role will also involve supporting the CEO with organizational design, identifying forward-thinking approaches to team structure and role definition. We need someone who can become the first point of contact for all future employees, as well as a trusted resource for people within the team. The successful candidate will be full of empathy, be an excellent communicator, be dedicated to radical candour, and be able to help the CEO ensure the current high bar for studio talent is met and exceeded in the coming years.
The People & Culture Lead will work directly with the company CEO to craft and execute on a plan for talent acquisition to fuel the studio’s growth. You will also work directly with the project leads to better understand the specific needs of their teams and areas, including identifying forward-thinking processes for professional growth. You will represent Hinterland at hiring fairs and proactively seek out top-level talent to ensure the studio’s high standards are maintained. And, of course, your first priority will be helping to ensure the ongoing engagement, health, and happiness of all members of the team.
We have a veteran development team with high average level of experience, so we need a People & Culture Lead who can help preserve our high-performance culture while also helping us bring less experienced developers into the fold. This means we need someone who is passionate about training and mentorship, and can understand the unique dynamics introduced by having a more experienced team.
At Hinterland, we strive to create a diverse work environment where all feel welcome, therefore we are looking for a People & Culture Lead who has specific ideas for how to engage and recruit from a diverse community of game developers, particularly women and minority groups. Hinterland’s mission is to create thoughtful places for our players, but this goal also extends to our company culture -- Hinterland should be a thoughtful place to work. The ideal candidate for this role is passionately dedicated to bringing their excellent work ethic, pragmatic personal philosophy, deep experience, and broad list of contacts, to the ongoing evolution of this mission and our studio.
This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits based out of our historic Gastown Vancouver location. We offer a mature, inclusive work environment with structured on-site time along with fixed days where team members are able to work from home. We are a small team and intend to stay that way, so everyone we hire needs to be exceptional.
If working with other highly talented developers in a small-team environment sounds appealing, we want to hear from you!
Hinterland is an equal-opportunity employer. The studio is comprised of a multi-national, multi-ethnic team. We value a diversity of backgrounds. We also value veteran experience and a strong work ethic that supports the studio’s culture and values. Our work ethic and production methodology is built around a “Getting Stuff Done” paradigm. We embrace a flexible working environment that affords our team members the opportunity to enjoy family time and exercise self-care. We balance this out with very high expectations about the quality of output from everyone on the team. We offer a variety of perks, but do not believe perks are the same thing as culture.
(Also, everyone who joins our team gets a pair of slippers. They are nice slippers.)
